The territory of Montese goes from the banks of the rivers Panaro and Leo, to the Apennine ridge that divides the provinces of Modena and Bologna. The first human settlements are probably dated to the Neolithic Age. Archaeological remains are dated to the Bronze and Iron Age, and to the Etrurian and Roman Period. The first written records about the actual main town are dated 1197. The population of the centre has developed at the feet of the fortress dated to the Third Century: now it is possible to admire its double surrounding walls with the pointed arch entrance door, the crenellated tower (an element that characterizes the Montese environment) and the two floors of the main building that is now the seat of the Historical Museum. Montese is the most agricultural Commune in the provinces of Modena. There are farms that mainly produce Parmesan cheese, but they also produce traditional foods such as potatoes and chestnuts. In September there is a Potato and Parmesan Fair, while in October, in the village of Maserno, there is a Chestnut Fair, where it is possible to taste some local specialities. In Montese there are many sports activities available in modern buildings: swimming, tennis, horse-riding and football. It's a nice place to spend your holidays: excursions are available in one of the numerous areas, through shadowy woods with streams of fresh water and artistic elements.
