Castel d'Aiano is the Apennine Municipality with the highest municipal capital (805 msl) in the Provinces of Bologna, between the Reno and Panaro rivers. It started being a fortified settlement during the Seventh century. The modern place name witnesses a fortress that existed for centuries but that nowadays has completely disappeared. Near the borders with the Provinces of Modena, during the Middle Ages it was contended between the Municipalities of Modena and Bologna but in 1308 it finally became one of Bologna's Provinces. There are numerous remains of that period: interesting fortified houses and the typical tower houses in the valleys of the streams Gea, Aneva and Vergatello. The historical complex of Torre Jussi, between the municipal capital and Rocca di Roffeno, is of particular interest. Among the civil buildings there are some water mills that are still working, for example that of Povolo in Labante. During the Second World War a lot of buildings were destroyed by the bombings. Religious architecture is very interesting, for example the Madonna di Brasa Sanctuary, near the homonym pass, and Santa Lucia church, an ancient Benedictine monastery placed on the "Nonantolana", a medieval route that passed through the region. From the environmental point of view, there are the famous caves of San Cristoforo in Labante: valuable natural caves, created from the calcareous source that produces a particular travertine said "sponga".
