It is near the main town and is well known as “la Madonnina”. It was taken by the Tenth U.S.A. division after the liberation of Castel d’Aiano (March, 5th 1945). From this mountain on April 14th 1945 the final movement towards the Po Valley began, which definitely destroyed the German resistance. Nowadays it is still possible to find paths and trenches

It is the main mountain between the Reno and Panaro rivers, on the Bologna-Modena border. During the war it was an important stronghold of the German Gothic Line and it was repeatedly attacked by the Americans and Partisans.

I Rubini

In this village, the division of the partisan brigade “Red Star” took place. It was headed by Mario Musolesi, called “il Lupo” (“the Wolf” )who arrived here in June 1944.

After a clash with “il Lupo”, Sugano Melchiorri left with 120 partisans and reached the free area of Montefiorino. Now it is used as an “educational farm” and has a virtual path discovering food during war time.

On July 15th 1944, in this area under the town of Montombraro two German soldiers were killed during an ambush. After two days, “Compagnia della morte” fascists, headed by Enrico Canarini, took 40 people of this area.

They were tortured in the Castelletto cinema: 20 were liberated and the others hanged on July 18th in the same place of the ambush. Their names are written on the monument that nowadays ...

A headstone in the car park near the Park’s Visitor Centre commemorates the 8 partisans and 2 legionaries who died in the famous battle of March 12th, 1944. A partisan group that had just been created by Leonida Patrignani “Bandiera” arrived here waiting for new weapons.
